The Cremator  (1969) dir. Juraj Herz, РCzech language, English subtitles. 95mins. 

One of the highlights of Czech New Wave, Herz’s brutally black comedic satire of a mild mannered and gentle Czech cremator who is easily Nazified in 1930s Prague. The film was banned for twenty years on release and became an underground cult classic of monochromatic psychedelia.

The epic landscape masterpiece by the master of Turkish New Wave, exploring the social and judicial corruption of rural Turkey and the stifling interplay between the disempowered, tribally influenced proletariat and the paralysed liberalism of the Westernised bourgeoisie. The heir to Andrei Tarkovsky’s mastery of widescreen mise-en-scene and the greatest of small-crew directors in the modern era. It won ten international awards, including Grand Prix at Cannes.
